Quick Check: Corn tortillas made just like grandma's

If you love Mexican food, there's nothing better than fresh, soft and moist corn tortillas. Usually, those you pick up at a grocery store are a disappointment, but I recently came across one that impressed me. I found Abuelita's Tortillas in the produce section of the Bel Air Market in Carmichael.

The price, $2.50 for a package of 10, is about double the usual brands found in grocery stores, but we figured they would be worth it if they were even similar to the ones the street vendors in San Diego sell. They are not quite that good, but they are wonderful tortillas -- fragrant with the aroma of fresh corn when you open the package, and thick and moist, with dark brown griddle marks. They are small, however, so we thought they would be best dipped in salsa or used to scoop up beans.

Even our friend from Texas who goes nuts for good tortillas was very impressed.
